about

Synthetic Division was founded by Shawn Decker in high school. "It was me, my synth, a pair of headphones and a cool name that I got from Math class." In 1999, Synthetic Division garnered respect in the music scene, performing regularly at the legendary Tokyo Rose in Charlottesville, VA. "Handing Gopal Metro of Bella Morte a copy of Tainted Goods is what got me my first gig."

Music became an escape for Shawn early in life. In 6th grade Shawn tested positive for HIV and was expelled from school. It wasn't until his early twenties that Shawn became comfortable talking about his medical resume. Soon thereafter, he began to incorporate those themes into his music. The first results of that synergy is Tainted Goods, a 6 song EP that is a glimpse into Decker's burgeoning ability as a songwriter, that ironically was hastily self-released during a time when his health wasn't holding up well.

"Nothing gets you an in into the local goth community faster than being in the process of dying," Decker says with a smile. Adding to the mystique of the release is the fact that world-reknowned HIV positive artist, Barton Lidice Benes, donated his artwork to the project. Years later, Barton's art would grace the cover of the Symptom of Life EP (2010).
